USJJF/USMAF WINTER CAMP 2000

The United States Ju-Jitsu Federation's and the United States Martial Arts Federation's Winter Camp 2000 was held from Thursday, February 10th to Sunday, February 13th in Reno, Nevada. The camp featured USJJF instructors from around the world and offered a variety of training in both traditional and competitive Ju-Jitsu. With over 50 members in attendance throughout the four day event, participants were treated with top level instruction and start new friendships as well as see old friends.

DAY 1

The first day of the Camp started with the USJJF Annual Board Meeting. In attendance were 22 members and observers, to include 16 voting members. The Meeting was presided over by Shihan Bruce R. Bethers, President of the USJJF. Others in notables to attend where the USJJF's Founder, Hanshi George Anderson, Robert Carver, Vice President, Bruce Butler, General Secretary and John Chatwood, Treasurer.

Business covered included:

Overview of USJJF and JJIF over the past year by Shihan Bethers.
1999 Financial Report was presented and approved by the Board.
Discussion of Corporate Sponsorships.
Michael Dunphy presented information concerning the upcoming National Championships.
USJJF Hall of Fame was discussed. Hall of Fame responsibilities were transferred to the USJJF for administration and reaffirmation was made that the USJJF Hall of Fame would maintain high standards and admission would always be without charge. Annual Awards were also discussed.
USJJF Financial Auditor gave a report as to the USJJF Finance and Auditing System. His report was accepted by the Board.

Later that night, a reception was held at Shihan Bethers' home for the USJJF Founder, Hanshi George Anderson.

Day 2

Hanshi Anderson instructs the class	Thursday began the actual training days of the camp. Starting things off at 9:00 am, Hanshi George Anderson presented a class on Advanced Kawashi, Kuzushi and Ate Waza Training for Ju-Jitsu.
Next came Soke Harris Warren of Nisei Bujutsu, who presented a class in elements of his system as well as Hakko-Ryu Ju-Jutsu.	Soke Warren showing traditional Ju-Jitsu techniques
Shihan Skip Koepke and Shihan Mark Barlow later gave a class on Ne-Waza and other grappling techniques. Instruction included the proper footwork to enter into Ne-Waza and methods to more securely hold your opponent.

The training day ended with Shihan Michael Dunphy who taught a class on the JJIF Duo System of competition. Shihan Dunphy was a member of the 1993 US Men's Team and competed at the JJIF World Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark. The presentation focused on realism and presentation. Later that night, a full delegation of instructors and participants had a "night out" in downtown Reno.

Day 3

The third day began with a presentation of the US Ju-Jitsu Rank Requirements by Shihan Bethers and Renshi Carver. Instruction was focused primarily on standing Kansetsu Waza.

In the afternoon, participants were treated to a class by Sensei Oren Gorgov, President of the Israel Full Contact Ju-Jitsu Association. Sensei Gorgov taught advanced joint locking combinations and finishing techniques.

Following his class, Sensei Gorgov and Sensei Aziz presented gifts to each of the USJJF Officers on behalf of the Israel Full-Contact Ju-Jitsu Association.

Soke Harris Warren was up again and taught the participants another hour of traditional Ju-Jitsu.

Kobudo Expert, Shihan James Caldwell taught a class on the Nunchaku presenting a history of the weapon, it's nomenclature, and striking and grappling techniques.

Concluding the day of instruction was Shihan John Linebarger who taught a class on Kumite and striking techniques for self-defense.

Day 4

Prior to the training day beginning, Shihan Bethers and the Executive Committee met and voted to approve the new USMAF/USJJF Insurance Program. Details will be announced in the next few weeks. The final day of the Winter Camp started with Shihan David Dye who presented a class in Police Self-Defense Training (Aikido Taiho Jutsu). Shihan Dye is a retire police officer and licensed Police Self-Defense Instructor in the State of California.

Following Shihan Dye's class, Shihan Bethers presented several awards to participants to include: Hanshi George Anderson, Founding Life Member Certificate; Shihan David Dye, Life Member Certificate; Sensei Ben DeLeon, promoted to Rokudan; Shihan James Caldwell, Master Instructor/Examiner Certificate; Sensei Henrick Hansson, receives rank recognition certificate to Renshi Robert Carver, Founding Life Member and Senior Instructor/Examiner Certificate.

As the days of training and fellowship concluded, the overall impression of all was that this years Winter Camp was a fantastic event and successful beyond expectations. Plans are now in the works for Summer Camp 2000 to be held in Rogers, Arkansas. Also, there is on the drawing board the possibility of a "Fall Camp in Ohio at Ohio State University, so stay tuned. Finally, Winter Camp 2001 was announced and plans are to have it again in Reno, Nevada during February 2001.
