T.R. McClanahan' s law enforcement career began when he was 29 years old
as a Deputy Sheriff in Portage County, State of Ohio. Three years later he
trained the Instructors of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department in
techniques of self-defense. Two years later he transferred to the Stark
County Sheriff's Department where he worked as a Deputy, taught Self
Defense, Scuba Diving/Underwater Search & Rescue, boating, and Riot
Control to the members of the Department and other Law Enforcement
Departments and Military. He was Permanently Certified by the Attorney
General - Ohio Peace Officers Training Council as an Instructor - Teacher
nine years later in all subjects.
He has also been certified by the Courts as an expert in the Methods and
Techniques of Police Combat Pistol, Self-Defense, SCUBA Search & Rescue
-Instructor (P.A.D.I.#15148), Riot Control, and Techniques and Mechanics
of Arrest, and, Methods and Techniques within the Martial Arts of Judo,
Ju-Jitsu, Karate and Taekwondo. While with the Stark County Sheriff's
Department, his first year and third year with the department, he won the
NRA Police Combat Pistol Class Championship of the United States. The year
he started with Stark County Sheriff, he organized the SWAT and Riot Teams
for said Law Enforcement Department, other Law Enforcement Departments
(State and Federal Instructors), including the Military. Many Police
Departments requested his assistance as an undercover operator his first
year with Start County Sheriff Department, for four years. He moved
through the ranks to Major in sixteen years, retiring two years later.

As his duties in law enforcement expanded, he was involved in the
organization of undercover operations for numerous Police and Sheriffs
Departments, including the United States Treasury, Bureau of Customs. With
the endorsement of George Papadopolus, President of the National Sheriffs
Association, he established the United States Police-Sheriff Association,
an organization devoted to aiding law enforcement officers and instructors
by preparing them for life and death situations during arrests involving
hand to hand combat with violent perpetrators. Emphasizing officer safety,
techniques were demonstrated which would minimize arrest time by enabling
the officer to quickly subdue an individual, and thereby gain control of a
potentially dangerous crime scene. Many Chiefs of Police, Sheriffs and
Judges of many Courts approved all of the methods. Professor McClanahan
has since then taught these sought after techniques to Police, Sheriff,
and Military forces throughout the United States and in many foreign
Countries. One of his students is an Instructor of the U.S. Navy Seals and
Marine Corps Recon Rangers.
In 1990 he supervised the State Police Olympic Games for Judo and Karate
and was also Chief Referee of these games. While acting as Director and
Coach - Teacher at the United States Olympic Training Center, he became
the only person in possession of the confidential complete biomechanics
studies of the techniques of Judo, Taekwondo and Karate. These reports
reflect the efficiency of each technique. He also served as a member of
the U.S. Olympic Medical Committee for the National Governing Body.
As a beginning student of Judo, Ju-Jitsu, Karate and (Tang) Taekwondo at
age seven, T.R. McClanahan studied these disciplines from the highest
level Master teachers from and in Japan and Korea. He competed in
tournaments and won many, at the age of 29 in Karate (Japan) Federation
Championship in full contact (Bogu) competition. Original Life Member #230
"JBBF" of the Judo Black Belt Federation (age 22 ), the Armed Forced Judo
Association, and the U.S. Judo Association Original Life Member # 125 (age
31). Life Member #1413 Amateur Athletic Union of the United States and
Past National Chairman of Martial Arts Committee and Past National
Taekwondo Committee Chairman. At age 37 he was an Instructor at the
National Olympic Training Camp.
At age 29 years old, Professor McClanahan helped negotiate the weight
class for Judo in Japan for the first Olympic Games as acting Chairman for
the National Governing Body with Mr. R. Kano, President, International
Judo Federation. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for Judo,
was the Original Director - Teacher at the United States Olympic Training
Center for the NGB of TaeKwonDo. In 1985-86 he served as a member of the
House of Delegates, United States Olympic Committee and the Medical
Committee. In Karate, Taekwondo and Judo, he served as a Coach - Teacher
on the Olympic level in all three sports. He also served as an Executive
Officer of the Pan American TaeKwonDo Union which set up the original
games in 1987. He was the original Chairman - Director of the United
States Olympic Training Center for Karate (NGB) starting in 1988 and
retired January 1, 1994.
He was rewarded by the State of Ohio House of Representatives, 116th
General Assembly of Ohio for TaeKwonDo as one of "Ohio's finest Citizens"
and again in 1990 by the 118th General Assembly of Ohio for Karate as one
of "America's finest citizens."
Professor T.R. McClanahan has earned his 8th degree of Black Belt
Certified by the Pan American Karate-Do Union, a Master Instructor 8th
Degree of Black Belt from Major Dong Hi Choi, Republic of Korea, original
Secretary of the Korean TaeKwonDo Association #117 [the original first
number ever issued], authorized to sign all ranks, a member and Master
Instructor with the World TaeKwonDo Federation (E6-1191) (WTF
International Referee 2nd Class), his Professorship of Judo certified by
the United States Judo Association [ his teacher and father was Professor
Sadaki Nakabayahi of the Kodokan Judo Institute ], and the International
Judo Association as a 7th degree of Black Belt, and his 4th Degree of
Black Belt in Tomiki Aikido certified by the International Association
Aikido Fugaguki.
His Ph.D. signed by the President of the Japan Aikido Association,
Professor Hideo Oba, his 9th Dan from China in Jujitsu, and has been
certified as a 9th Degree Black Belt with the National Governing Body for
Ju-Jitsu of the United States of America (United States Ju-Jitsu
Federation [Founding Life Member #014] Sanctioned with/under and by the
International Ju-Jitsu Federation, Ju-Jitsu North American Union, General
Association of International Sports Federation and the International World
Games Association. On March 03, 2000, he was Certified as "having achieved
the highest level of US JU-JITSU Instructor/Examiner" and "GRAND MASTER US
JU-JITSU INSTRUCTOR / EXAMINER" by the National Governing Body. He is the
Vice Chairperson of the "Central Technical Committee" for the United
States.
He has been a National Referee in Judo, a National Referee in Karate and
an International Referee in TaeKwonDo. He was the first AAU Judo and
Karate Champion in and for the State of Ohio. He was the Konan Judo
Yudanshikai Judo Championship when it was the JBBF - Judo Black Belt
Federation, back in the late fifties early sixties. He was also on the
Certification Rank (Technical) Committee for most all Martial Arts
Organizations within the United States, at one time or another. He has
served as a Manager and Coach at many United States Olympic Festivals with
the National Governing Bodies. These special methods and techniques are on
video and issued to only Law Enforcement Departments, by request. He has
traveled as a member of the United States Governing Body Team(s) as a
Coach, and/or International Referee and/or as the Pan American Treasurer
of the NGB. These Countries were Ecuador, Denmark (2 times), Mexico,
Japan, Korea and Spain.
During these times, he worked full time at other employment and in his
spare time went to special schools for real estate appraising. He was
initiated in to Freemasonry, and had his Master Mason Degree conferred by
Wm. McKinley Lodge #431, and a year later his 32nd Degree Scottish Rite
within the Valley of Canton. On May 5, 2001 he was knighted by the KNIGHTS
TEMPLAR (Ohio Commandeer #83) and a member of the Order of Malta.
Today, Professor McClanahan, a State (and Federal) Certified General
Appraiser, teaches methods and techniques of appraising, does commercial,
industrial appraisals at "Appraisal Company" in Canton - Massillon, Ohio,
part time, during the day, and he continues to teach Martial Arts to
Citizens and Police in the evenings, in this time frame.
His hobby is sailing (Gulf of Mexico and Lake Erie). He is a member of the
United States Coast Guard Aux. He is in the position of Division MT
(Training Officer) - Instructor, the original Vice Flotilla Commander and
founder of Canton Ohio Flotilla, the Founder and original Flotilla
Commander of Massillon Ohio Flotilla, the original Founder Flotilla
Commander of Lake Cable Jackson Township Flotilla, Stark County, Ohio, and
was the new Flotilla Commander of the new Portage Lakes Charted Flotilla
for March, 2000, and a designated "Vessel Examiner."
He has completed the U.S. Coast Guard course "TCT" Team Coordination
Training and the "Incident Command System" [National Strike Force]
"National Training Curriculum" and as of 11/12/1997 a certified
"Instructor" qualified to teach each course he successfully completed. He
has completed the complete United States Coast Guard Auxiliary "Boating
Skills and Seamanship Course, Sailing and Seamanship Course (grade 95%),
Coastal Navigation General "Closed Book" BN-3 Exam (97.5%), Coastal
Navigation Cruise Chart "Open Book" BN-4 Exam (100%), Advanced Coastal
Navigation General "Closed Book" AN-5 Exam (100%), and the Advanced
Coastal Navigation Chart "Open Book" AN-6 Exam (96.5%)(August 18, 1998).
Shortly thereafter, he took the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation closed book
exam at the U.S. Coast Guard Station Cleveland and obtained a grade of
96%.
This was certified by QE Earl Count. On March 27, 1999, he received the
"United States Coast Guard Award of Merit". On May 18, 1999 he was "Crew
Qualified" Certified. In November 1999 he obtained a "United States Coast
Guard Auxiliary USCG OPERATIONAL FACILITY Number 429-609. On 3/26/2000 the
United States Coast Guard submitted his completed Certified Pined Coxswain
Rating, and then, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary confirmed his Pined
Coxswain Certification. The Division Captain at that time requested he be
the Division "QE" Qualified Examiner. In December 1999, he became the
Division Eight Captain until January 01, 2003. In March 0f 2001, he
received the U.S. Coast Guard Sustained Service Award and again September
2001.
The 123rd General Assembly of The STATE of OHIO gave "special recognition
to Master T. R. McClanahan" for his outstanding service to the USA Karate
Federation, civil concerns with dynamic leader in the community, and as
one of Ohio's finest citizens."
On July 14, year 2000, THE US JU JITSU FEDERATION inducted "Thurl R.
McClanahan GRANDMASTER" in the NATIONAL HALL OF FAME as "SENIOR FOUNDING
MEMBER." He also received the "SADAKI NAKABAYASHI AWARD for OUTSTANDING
TECHNICAL EXELLENCE" by the US JU JITSU FEDERATION and the USA Karate
Federation. The LAW USKA ENFORCEMENT INTERNATIONAL awarded a certificate
for "PAST DIRECTOR & FOUNDIND BOARD MEMBER, OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO
LAW ENFORCEMENT IN OHIO, and confirmed A PERMANENT MEMBER of the
INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD OF THE POLICE SELF DEFENSE INSTRUCTORS
INSTITUTE of the UNITED STATES.
On August 26, 2000, at the UNITED STATES NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER, Thurl "TR"
McClanahan was elected as Chairman National Referee Committee for the
United States Ju Jitsu Federation. In year 2001, he had another appointed
as Chairperson of this committee so as to spend more time with the U.S.
Team as Coach. On August 27th, 2000, at the UNITED STATES NATIONAL
TRAINING CENTER, Thurl "TR" McClanahan was selected as Senior National
Coach of the United States Team for the UNITED STATES JU JITSU FEDERATION.
This young team participate in the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Denmark in
November, 2000. On Oct. 3, 2000, he became the new U.S. Coast Guard Aux.
Division 09E-08 Captain until Jan. 2003.
At the NATIONAL HALL OF FAME on September 13th, 2002, Professor McClanahan
received the following Awards: CITY OF AKRON, OHIO Special Citizen
Recognition by Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic, the United States Ju-Jitsu
Federation "Black Belt, 9th Dan US TAIHO JUTSU" dated as of march 3, 2000,
The United States Ju-Jitsu Federation 'OUTSTANDING SENIOR NATIONAL COACH
2000-2001 as of September 13, 2002, and the PRESIDENT'S LEADERSHIP AWARD
as of September 13, 2002. At the 2003 National Championships in New York,
Professor McClanahan was presented his (IJJF) International Ju Jitsu
Federation 9th Degree Black Belt Certification Rank Certificate dated
April 20, 2003, signed by the International President, from the North
American Commissioner and the President of the United States Ju Jitsu
Federation. It is understand there are only two International Certified
9th Degree Black Belts with the IJJF. Also, he received his 9th Degree of
Black Belt from the "TAI-HO JITSU" of the "PSDI INTERNATIONAL" United
States PSDI Association.
On November 13, 2003, Thurl McClanahan was presented a "Homeland Security
Founding Member's certificate" (dated March 01, 2003 Washington, D.C.)
signed by Tom Ridge, Secretary of Homeland Security, United States
Department of Homeland Security, from T.H. Collins, Admiral, United States
Coast Guard.
