Angel Garcia
Member, Board of Directors, Reno, NV

Angel first got on the mat in March, 1963, at John’s Judo & Ju-Jitsu and with the A.A.U. in Orlando, Florida.

In April 1964, Angel left for the Army while still a Brown Belt. After completing basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, he was chosen and given a chance to train as a student instructor and sent T.D.Y. to jump school at Ft. Benning, Georgia. After completing training there, Angel was transfered to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina with the 82nd airborne Division. After additional training he was sent to Panama with the Special Forces to train all new troops in hand-to-hand combat. After a short tour overseas and recovering from a stint in the hospital, Angel left the Service.

Returning to Orlando and training at John’s Judo & Ju-Jitsu, Angel helped promote the school through frequent competition. In July 1969, Angel was promoted to Shodan by Mr. Jack John’s and Mr. John Chambers in Judo & Ju-Jitsu.

Angel started his own school with the help of Japanese instructor, Sensei Yamamoto.

Angel joined the U.S.J.A. in late 1969 as a Shodan. Starting a new school in Orlando, Florida. Under the guidance of Mr. George Bass, past president of U.S.J.A. Angel learned to run a school, teach class and to be a true Black Belt.  Angel has spent much of his time working with young adults, and gang members.   As a former gang member himself, his experience has proved to be a valuable source of leadership and guidance to troubled youths.

Angel was promoted to Rokudan (6th Dan) in JuJitsu in June 1996 and to Rokudan in Judo in March 1998.

Angel is a Gold Benefactor, and life member #58 in the U.S.J.A. Hall of Fame.  He is now a USJJF Life Member.
